'She just happened in': Child Labor 1908-12


Portraits of child labor in the United States between 1908 and 1912, as documented by Lewis Hine. This one above is from Newberry, South Carolina.

From the website:

The overseer said apologetically, "She just happened in." She was working steadily. The mills seem full of youngsters who "just happened in" or "are helping sister."
