The confrontation began when a fuming Mido said to Shehata: “Why are you taking me off?”

The Egypt coach told Mido it was because he was the boss to which the striker yelled: “You are nothing but a donkey.”

Shehata angrily replied: “No, it is you who is the donkey.” Mido, who is on loan from Serie A Roma, said: “I was angry when Shehata decided to replace me.

“I was not that bad and if I had stayed on I would have scored. I am sorry for the fans but I am not sorry for Shehata.”

Mido had been rushed back into the line-up after suffering a groin injury but Egyptian officials called a special meeting on Tuesday to discuss the player’s actions.

Mido had earlier angered team-mates by insisting on sharing a room with his wife.
