Beckham signs for LA Galaxy for $250 million!!!

That's SICK! $255 million over FIVE years..it's BY FAR the highest contract in professional sports in the US (Alex Rodriguez's contract with MLB for $252 million over ten years is a DISTANT second)...and we're talking about MLS soccer over here! It's bigger than any soccer contract in Europe (the highest paid player in Europe is believed to be Raul of Real Madrid who makes around £160,000 a week...this contract pays Beckham a staggering £492,000 a week!!!). For perspective, Shaq gets $30 million a year, Kobe gets $28 million, A-Rod gets $25 million and on it goes.

I know they're banking on him to put MLS soccer on the map, and he will. I also understand that his contract is not a reflection of his worth as a player-even though he's a superb player - rather his value as a marketing icon and someone who will draw more and more people into the game (akin to Howard Stern's contract with Sirius). But this amount of cash is simply OBSCENE.

It's only the 11th day of 2007 and I believe this is already the biggest sports story of the year.

PS His nickname in Spain is 'Goldenballs'. Gotta love the Spanish.
