As far as I can tell, Hiplife is the successor to the more classical 'Highlife' sound which originated in West Africa. Amnesiac has a great example of a Highlife song on her blog, or you can peruse the entry about Highlife on Afropop.com here.

Interesting, especially given that if he was rapping in English the song would be considered just straight rap, right? He seems to have imported the US sound directly - making me wonder whether Hiplife is just the West African or Ghanaian version of rap.
