Mido taunted by West Ham fans
Very droll..
West Ham United fans taunted Mido with racist remarks, not hard to pick up even from the press box. "Shoe, shoe, shoe bomber" the fans sung, as well as "Your mum's a terrorist."
The game had seen a few players return to White Hart Late such as Sheringham, Etherington, Zamora and Konchesky, while Spurs' Carrick and Defoe played against their ex-club. To add to this, Mido, an Egyptian, and Benayoun, an Israeli, were on the pitch.
Although one man was arrested for racist chants, more is going to be done about it. Leon Mann, said on behalf of Let's Kick Racism Out of Football organisation said, "We will be contacting West Ham about the incident. A lot of progress has been made but the introduction of players such as Mido and Yossi Benayoun present further challenges because fans need to understand that it is a form of racism."
Martin Jol was quick to comment on the situation too, calling the taunts "tasteless" and comparing the Spurs fans' acknowledgement to ex-player Sheringham with what the Hammers fans did.
Paul Stalteri commented on the racist remarks saying, "Obviously it doesn't belong in sport. It is a form of racism."
He added, "He (Mido) scored a great goal so he gave them the right answer."
Famous football commentator Clive Tyldesley wrote in his report for the Telegraph, "It (the goal) was the best possible response from the Egyptian forward to tasteless taunting by some of the visiting supporters."
