Pretty Despicable

Politics aside, racism is an abhorrent thing. In the 1920s and 1930s, Julius Streicher was a Nazi publisher who helped fan German hatred towards the Jews. This book, entitled Der Giftpilz ("the Toadstool") was an example of some of his work, aimed at German children. The tone and the statements it makes are so OTT, it almost seems like a joke that wouldn't fool anyone. Of course, living in the 21st century and experiencing some of the paranoia surrounding Arabs, it really doesn't surprise. It's true, evil is only remarkable in it's banality.

Actually, you're kind of wrong, forsooth. It's true, none of the hatred is legitamized and openly spewed in the media, but on a one-to-one basis, some of that stuff can be just as ugly. Anyways, the point of my post wasn't to compare the way Arabs are treated now with the way Jews were (they had it much worse). I was just amazed how a level of simmering hostility against a certain people can escalate into a surreal orgy of madness and violence. Honestly, if the US decided to intern Arabs in camps, it wouldn't be any different than what happened to the Japanese, Italians and Germans during WW2. All I'm saying is that this book is vile..but we're only ever two or three degrees away from going back to something like that.
