Carlitos' way

Watch out for this kid in next year's World Cup.

A few years ago, someone said we knew the world was upside down when the best golfer was black and the best rapper was white. Imagine how mad the world is today when the best football player in Brazil is Argentinean.

Carlos Tevez: Snubbed big money offers from Europe to stay in South America.

Carlos Tevez came to Corinthians last December with a price tag reading £12m and a weight of expectation to match. It wasn't just that the 21-year old striker-cum-creator had set tongues wagging with his performances and goals for Boca Juniors and Argentina or that he was the first major player in decades to swap Argentina for Brazil.

Tevez's arrival in São Paulo was emblematic of the new era at Corinthians and marked a reversal of the time honoured tradition of talented young Latins leaving South America for Europe. It promised the dawn of a new age, for Corinthians, Brazilian football and perhaps even professional football in Latin America. Tevez has not disappointed.

Almost a year after making his debut, Tevez is on the brink of leading Corinthians to their first Brazilian league title of the new millennium. With just five games of the season to play, Corinthians are six points ahead of their closest rivals, Fluminense and Internacional. They have won more and lost fewer games than any other team and scored 80 times, more than anyone else. A tireless Tevez has led the charge, putting away 18 goals to make him the tournament's third top goalscorer.

'He is the player that can change the game totally in an instant, one who will give any defence in the world a nightmare,' said Kia Joorabchian, the Corinthians boss whose faith in Tevez prompted him to splash out a South American record fee to secure his services. 'He is very important; for Corinthians he has been the fundamental element and the heart and soul of the group.'
