England's Credit

Here's a controversial choice for England captain: Owen Hargreaves. His man-of-the-match performance for England epitomised grit, determination and steely toughness. In a team full of boys (in Wayne Rooney's case, petulant boys), he emerged as a man, staking all for his country. And while he lacks the cliched tags like 'Lion Heart' and 'Captain Fantastic' that John Terry and Steven Gerrard collect on a weekly basis, courtesy of the hack press, when his case for captain is presented, he'll only have actions to show, over words.

Maybe controversial in England but I'm not in England and I agree there was not anyone on that pitch that had the determination and heart that Hargreaves had.It makes me wonder why he wasn't played earlier in the holding position which could have helped Sven figure out the rest of the formation earlier. It seemed obvious to me that after 30-40 minutes Portugal did everything they could to avoid attacking him directly.

England needs someone to lead the team who is not a GQ model with declining talent.I'd vote for Hargreaves for captain in a heartbeat.
