Why Superman has lost his resonance

I have an interesting theory why the current generation will not identify with Superman the way previous generations did. I'm not saying the new movie won't be huge, because it will, but in terms of identifying with Superman as the all-American hero (Even down to him being an immigrant), he'll never recapture his cache. Why?

Because people haven't forgiven him for not showing up on 9/11.
